Windows 11 All-in-One For Dummies, 2nd Edition: Discover what’s new!

Many of you know me as an editor at Digital Citizen, but there’s another side to my professional life: I’m also a book author. Over the years, I’ve written ten books, most focusing on Windows. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned through writing these books, including Windows 11 All-in-One For Dummies, it’s that Windows is constantly evolving. Windows 11, in particular, has taken this evolution to a new level, rolling out fresh features and new apps at a pace that can leave even experienced users confused and frustrated. Why a second edition?

When I wrote the first edition, Windows 11 had just been released. Except for a new user interface, it wasn’t that much different from Windows 10. As a result, I started the book using the structure and most of the table of contents from Windows 10 All-in-One For Dummies, 4th Edition.

Windows 11 has changed a lot since its initial release. Microsoft added new features, removed others, rebranded some of its apps, and launched new ones. Today, with Microsoft’s continuous updates and the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) through Copilot, Windows 11 has grown into a substantially different operating system. As a result, many of the things covered in the first edition of Windows 11 All-in-One For Dummies are no longer correct. I aim to help users, so I decided to create a second edition covering all these changes while maintaining the friendly, accessible approach that made the first edition successful.

What’s different in the second edition?

The new Windows 11 All-in-One For Dummies, 2nd Edition, brings significant improvements over its predecessor. Though slightly more concise, it delivers more valuable content through better organization and an improved structure that guides readers smoothly from one topic to the next. I’ve updated the content to reflect Windows 11’s evolution, removing coverage of discontinued apps and features while adding the necessary sections on all its new capabilities.

Artificial intelligence received a lot of attention in this edition, with detailed coverage of Windows 11’s integrated AI tools, from Copilot to Windows Studio Effects and beyond. The book introduces new sections, including a useful guide to Microsoft Family for parents setting up parental controls, an exploration of Windows 11’s Accessibility features, and enhanced coverage of the operating system’s privacy tools. The new Outlook app gets its fair share of attention, and so do the advanced tools for more technical users, like Hyper-V or Windows Terminal. I’ve also expanded the sections dealing with security. With the rising concerns about ransomware and data protection, I felt it was crucial to provide clear, actionable advice on keeping your system secure.

Another significant improvement to this edition is the expanded coverage of Phone Link, which explains how to integrate your smartphone(s) with Windows 11. Readers will learn how to run mobile apps from their laptop, transfer media effortlessly, send texts from their PC, and create a productive workflow between their devices. Throughout the book, you’ll also find updated troubleshooting tips incorporating the latest Windows 11 tools.

My approach to writing this book

After writing so many books, I’ve learned that the best technical writing doesn’t just tell you what to click – it helps you understand why you’re clicking it. That’s why I’ve structured this book to explain not just the how but also the why behind Windows 11’s features.
